A Partner Impact Event with Indiana University, Bloomington
March 21, 2024 | Format: Online | Program Type: Webinar
Drawing Connections Between Holistic Student Support and Sense of Belonging
Development and disbursement of student scholarships is a crucial way to support student success for many large research institutions. However, understanding the breadth of students' needs continues to be a blind spot; as is fostering sense of belonging to encourage persistence.
At Indiana University Bloomington, the Hoosier Scholars Program stands out as a cornerstone initiative, providing comprehensive support to first-year students. By Integrating Mentor Collective’s peer mentoring technology into an initiative designed to “engage students in a wealth of opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom…” IU Bloomington is rewriting the handbook on developing two-way student communication. In leveraging trained peer mentors, the R1 university is helping students create a community among their peers, learn help-seeking behaviors, and foster a sense of belonging for their students.
Join us on Thursday, March 21st, as we welcome IU’s Vice Provost of Enrollment Management, Dr. David B. Johnson, and Assistant Vice Provost and Executive Director of Retention, Sarah Booher, for a conversation about how the outcomes of Hoosier Scholars play into the institution's larger goals. You’ll learn more about why holistic student support is critical and the assessment tools of the Mentor Collective platform that have enabled IU to act intentionally to dismantle barriers en route to graduation.
Through This Collaboration, Indiana University, Bloomington Saw:
- Increased median GPA (0.15 in 2020 and 0.29 in 2021) for students who participated
-
A 2 percent increase in retention among students who participated
-
A significant 5 percent increase in retention among international students
-
Increased sense of belonging for mentors and mentees in all areas measured
Said one student about their mentorship experience with Hoosier Scholars, “This program has really made me feel valued within the IU community. It makes me feel like I can bring value to others.
